Free Music Promotion Tools: What You Can Do Without Paying
A free music promotion workflow can cover release preparation, editorial pitching, basic smart links, and some curator discovery. The important question is which task is actually free, and where each product asks you to upgrade.
From the team behind Virtual Publicist, our featured product. Ownership & methodology.
A toolkit with the limits shown
| Resource | Free use | Limit to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify for Artists | Pitch an eligible upcoming song to Spotify editors | Eligibility and timing apply; selection is not guaranteed |
| SubmitHub | Standard credits for participating curators | Not every curator accepts standard credits |
| Feature.fm | Basic smart links and a limited free plan | Service, analytics, and email-access limits apply |
| Virtual Publicist | Artist analysis and discovery previews | Starting outbound pitches requires a paid plan |
| Our press-release template | Read, edit, copy, and download | You supply the facts, assets, and outreach |
Start with the release you already have
Write down the date, audience, one-sentence story, and listening destination. Check that your artist name and credits match across the assets. A tool will not repair a confusing release brief, and a free account is only useful if it supports the next task on your list.
Pitch through the appropriate channel
Spotify for Artists lets eligible artist teams pitch an unreleased song to its editors. Spotify recommends delivery at least seven days before release and allows one song pitch at a time. This is separate from contacting independent playlist curators. Source: Spotify's pitching guidance.
SubmitHub's standard-credit route is another option when a relevant curator accepts it. Check availability before building a campaign around a free quota. Source: SubmitHub's free promotion guide.
Give listeners one clear destination
Feature.fm lists a free plan with basic link features. The plan has restrictions, including limited services and email access. Decide what you need to measure before paying for more detailed reporting. Source: Feature.fm pricing.
A release link should make the next action obvious. Share it consistently and check that every destination works on a phone before your release goes live.
Use free discovery before committing to outreach
Virtual Publicist's free tier is a way to assess the discovery experience. The current pricing page places outbound pitching on paid plans. If you need to send pitches now, include that cost in your decision rather than treating a discovery preview as a full free campaign. Source: VP plans.
When is an upgrade worth considering?
Upgrade to solve an observed limitation: access to the contacts you need, a higher useful submission allowance, or reporting you will actually use. Before upgrading, set a spending cap and write down the task the purchase should make easier. Review that decision after the release.
Can I promote a song with no software budget?
Yes, you can prepare assets, research suitable contacts, use available free submission routes, and share your release. Your time and the quality of your material still matter.
Are these free trials?
This page distinguishes ongoing free features from paid features. Check each provider's current limits; a paid-tier trial is not the same as permanent free access.
