An artist bio gives someone enough context to understand the music and describe the project accurately. Concrete details are more useful than a collection of impressive-sounding adjectives.

What belongs in the short version
Identify the artist, describe the music in useful terms and add one distinctive fact. End with the current project when the bio accompanies a release. It should remain understandable to someone who has never heard the artist before.
Fictional example: “Mira Vale is a Bristol electronic artist combining restrained percussion with everyday field recordings. Her single Last Bus Home turns sounds from the late-night commute into a story about finding familiarity in a new city.” This example is invented, not a testimonial or real artist profile.
Add depth without padding
The longer version can explain how the project developed, what the collaborators contributed and why a recording decision matters. Choose details that illuminate the current music. A complete childhood chronology is rarely necessary for a release-focused biography.
Use verified achievements sparingly and accurately. Name the source of a quotation, distinguish an appearance from an award and do not imply a publication endorsed an artist merely because it mentioned them.
Keep versions consistent
Maintain one source document with dates, credits and approved language. Adapt length for the destination without changing facts. Recheck old biographies before copying them into a new campaign; “forthcoming” releases and former lineup details become stale quickly.
Add the completed bio to your EPK and use a shorter introduction in the pitch email.
Frequently asked questions
Should the bio be written in third person?
Third person is convenient for an EPK because another person can quote or adapt it. A personal artist website may use a different voice if it remains clear.
What if I have no press or awards?
Describe the music, process and current project honestly. A specific, accurate introduction is more useful than invented credentials.
